As associations providing assistance to the underprivileged launch their winter campaigns, they all make the same observation: the number of beneficiaries is steadily increasing in the world's sixth-largest economy. For example, Restos du Cœur distributed eight million meals in 1985, compared with 160 million last year. Is poverty a French inevitability? We asked Layla Abdelké Yakoub, Head of Tax Justice and Inequality Advocacy at Oxfam, Henriette Steinberg, National Secretary of Secours Populaire and Simon-Pierre Sengayrac, Co-Director of the Jean-Jaurès Foundation's Economic Observatory.
